A dry well is essentially a large drum that is buried under ground to store water. Each one holds about 50 gallons and can be connected infinitely to hold any amount of water needed.
Much like a rain garden, dry wells are used in situations where there is no other viable method for water diversion. The benefit of a drywell is that it is buried underground and not visible in the lawn.
